Cabbage kootu with moong dal, coconut, green chilli and small onion, cumin seeds as flavorings. My mom makes cabbage kootu this way, so I learnt it from her.

This is quite different, I have seen only mom makes this way, MIL makes it yellow with sambar powder and chana dal in it.

I love it both ways, still like moms the best 🙂 It's so flavorful, the grinding part makes it smell great! I simply love this kootu with rice and ghee. Perfect as accompaniment for vatral kuzhambu and puli kuzhambu!

    Ingredients

    ingredients needed for cabbage kootu

    Why I love this

    • It is so different from the yellow kootu and tastes similar to avial because of the coconut paste, coconut oil.
    • Small onions add an excellent flavor.
    • Super quick, healthy, wholesome!

    Pressure cooker kootu

    1. Take a small pressure cooker firstly and add moong dal to it. Then, top it with chopped cabbage and sprinkle salt over it. After that, add 1 cup water over it.
    dal
    cabbage, water, salt

    2. Pressure cook for just one whistle in medium flame. Meanwhile let's grind the coconut mixture.

Firstly grind coconut, chilli with ¼ cup water to a smooth paste.

    pressure cook
    coconut, chilli, water

    3. After that, add small onion, cumin and grind coarsely.

    onion cumin
    ground paste

    4. By now the pressure cooker work done. Open the lid once pressure is released naturally. Mix well and add ground paste to it, once again mix well.

    done
    add ground paste

Bring to boil brisk and switch off the flame. Finally add some fresh curry leaves and a drizzle of coconut oil if desired for extra flavor.

    boil muttaikose kootu
    temper

Lastly, temper by heating a teaspoon of oil. Splutter mustard, then add urad dal and give it a roast, curry leaves and mix to kootu.

    ready

Pressure cooker cabbage kootu is ready!

    Variations

    • Instead of green chilli, you can cook with turmeric and sambar powder.
    • Also you can swap moong dal with chana dal. Soak 1 hour prior cooking.

    Stove top version

    1. First cook the chopped cabbage with 1 & ¼  cups of water, salt till done.
    Step 1 cabbage kootu recipe

    2. After that, add the cooked mashed moong dal and stir well.

    Step 2 cook

    3. Grind coconut, green chilli, with little water firstly to a smooth paste, then add small onion, cumin seeds and grind coarsely. Add to kootu.

    Step 3 add

    4. Bring to boil and mix well. Take care not to leave it as such while it boils, as it gets burnt in the bottom if left unattended for a while, so keep stirring.

    Step 4 mix

    5. Lastly temper with the items in the " tempering table”and mix well.

    Step 5 temper

Mix well and serve as an accompaniment for rice, usually we make  this for vatral kuzhambu.(also for kara kuzhambu and puli kuzhambu)

    • ¼ cup Coconut You can double the quantity for white results
    • ½ teaspoon Cumin seeds
    • 2 Small onion
    • 2 Green chilies
    • ¼ teaspoon Rice flour

    To temper

    • 1 teaspoon Coconut oil
    • ½ teaspoon Mustard

Prevent your screen from going dark

    Instructions

    • First cook the chopped cabbage with 1 & ¼  cups of water, salt till done.
    • Add the cooked mashed moong dal and stir well.
    • Grind the ingredients under “To Grind” and stir in to the cooked cabbage.
    • Bring to boil and mix well.

    Notes

    • For white kootu, use less dal, more coconut. Also use getti kose which is whiter and firm.
    • You can adjust dal and cabbage quantity as per your need. I like more veggie and less dal but you can add more if you want to.
