Easy ulundu pidi kozhukattai | Khara kozhukattai

March 14, 2008 by Raks Anand 25 Comments / Jump to Recipe

Easy ulundu pidi kozhukattai or khara kozhukattai with same ingredients as the traditional ulundu kozhukattai/  khara kozhukattai - Rice flour, urad dal as main ingredients.

    easy ulundu pidi kozhukattai

But this is perfect for beginners who doesn't want to spend time in making the traditional stuffing method.

Or who doesn't know to make it. Or for a lazy day, yet you want to make and eat the kozhukattai.

Also this is apt to use up the extra ulundu pooranam after vinayakar chaturthi.

My mother used to make this kozhukattai on the day of her monthly fasting on 'Sangada hara Chaturthi prasadam' (offering). Urad dal is very good for health, especially for ladies to strengthen back.

    Easy ulundu pidi kozhukattai recipe

    Recipe Cuisine:Indian  |  Recipe Category:Breakfast/ Dinner
Prep Time: 1 Hr soaking time    |  Cook time: 25 mins     |  Serves: 4

    Ingredients

    Rice flour - 1 cup

    Urad dhal - ½ cup

    water - 2 cup

    Green chillies - 4

    Asafoetida - 2 pinches

Coconut - 3 tablespoon (Or as per your wish)

    Salt- As needed

    To temper

    Mustard - 1 tsp

    Asafoetida - 2 pinches

    Curry leaves - 1 sprig

    Method

    1. Soak urad dhal for an hour and grind green chillies first and then add asafoetida and urad dal to it. Use inch/juice button in the mixer to grind to a coarse paste.
    2. Heat a heavy bottomed vessel with 2 teaspoon of oil and add the tadka items. Pour water to it, add required salt.
    3. When the water starts boiling, add the ground paste, coconut.
    4. Add rice flour stirring briskly with flame low. Stir till you get a dough consistency,by this time the rice flour should have got half cooked and you get a dough.
    5. The dough will not be so sticky after it cools down. Grease the idly plate and your hands with oil and make round patties ( kozhukattais ), arrange them and steam cook for 10 minutes.

    Notes

    • Depending on the variety of rice flour you use, the water gets absorbed quickly or takes time after you add it to the boiling water. Anyways we make patties and steam again, so it doesn't matter much.
    • Coconut can be added more or less as per your wish. You can use coconut bits too.

Your tasty, healthy kozhukattai is ready! We enjoyed with chinna vengaya chutney and sambar!
