About Oats upma
Upma is a staple breakfast in most Indian households because it is quick, flexible and comforting. This vegetable oats upma keeps the familiar taste of upma intact while swapping rava for oats, making it a very good oats recipe for weight loss and everyday eating.
After all these festivals and all these cooking plus Vj's busy office schedule, I failed to keep track of my weight. No proper workouts that I do usually too. After a month when I saw my weight I was plus 2 kg.
So I thought it's high time to get back to tract and wanted first to cut down my rice intake. I love oats and make few dishes out of it, as you can check it here in my Indian style oats recipes for breakfast.
Only thing, I must want everything hot, whatever it is I can eat. And this upma is one I often make but never thought of blogging about it here. I cheat sometimes making it without vegetables.
It's always better to add few vegetables, to make it healthy and tasty too. Such simple and easy recipe you can make it for yourself. I had with fresh squeezed orange juice.
And here is the cute napkin you gave Sharmi, atlast I used it properly and thanks for the same 🙂

Why I love this?
This oats upma is
- Fluffy, not gooey
- Ready in 15 minutes
- Tasty with south Indian familiar temperings
- High in fibre, keeps full long, naturally filling and thus weight management
- Nutritious with vegetables, light with coconut oil
Oats upma Ingredients
Here are the ingredients to make Oats upma
- Oats - I used quick cook oats
- Vegetables - Carrot, beans, green peas
- Onion - For flavour base
- Green chilli - Gives you spice & flavour
- Tempering items - Mustard seeds, urad dal, chana dal provides upma's flavour.
- Curry leaves - For flavour
Please check my recipe card below for quantities.
Step by step photos
- Firstly, finely chop half of a carrot, 4 beans, a fist full of frozen peans and onion. Slit green chillies.
- Then, heat oil in a pan and temper with the items given under 'To temper', then add onion and fry until translucent.
- After that, add vegetables, green chillies and fry in medium flame for 2 minutes. Sprinkle a little salt just for the vegetables if you want.

- Add oats, salt and mix well for a minute. Add ¼ cup water and mix well and cook covered for 2 minutes.

- Later again sprinkle the remaining water and mix well and cook covered for another 2 minutes. This way it wont turn too gooey but still gets cooked moist. Top with coconut oil or sesame oil if desired.

Always eat hot immediately. I have it as such, if you want you can eat it with any chutney or sambar.

Top tips
Cook the vegetables without changing colour/ overcooking it. So always do in medium flame.
Chopping vegetables very fine lets it cook fast while frying. itself.
Water ratio depends on type of oats.
Substitutions & Variations
Oats - You can adapt the same way for steel cut oats too. Just increase the water quantity as it takes a while for cooking.
So for steel cut oats you need the reverse. ½ cup steel cut oats needs 1 cup water.
Same for rolled oats. You can choose to sprinkle water as you cook to avoid it becoming sticky.
Add peanuts, cashews or seeds for crunch.
FAQs
Yes, you can use any type of oats, just water quantity varies.
Do not add all water at once, add little by little in stages.
200-250 calories.
Serving suggestion
Oats upma tastes best when enjoyed hot. You can have it as such or with some peanut chutney/ coconut chutney as side dish.

Nice recipe! looks very delicious and healthy.. one question, you have mentioned that you used instant oats, I usually buy normal (non instant version) oats from Quaker. In that case will the same amount of water be enough? and are there any other changes that I need to make to the above recipe? Please clarify. Thanks
