I wanted to post this last year itself, but somehow couldn't. So this year, first, I wanted to share this easy Khoya modak first for the upcoming festival. This has been most wanted by few readers, who has been requesting to post it soon last year.
Sorry, but happy to share at-least this year. This recipe was sent by a reader - Chandni Patel last year itself. Thank you for sharing the recipe and thank you Jeyashri for the Modak mould 🙂
About
Ganesh Chaturthi festival means modak, is it not? As a south Indian, I always make steamed modak (the kozhukattai version) with rice flour and a stuffing.
Just like there are many kozhukattai recipes, you can also choose from a lot of modak recipes.
There are various types available these days commercially. Everything can be prepared easily at home too.
What I love about these are, most of them are no steam version for Siddhivinayak. Main ingredient is mawa.
Depending on the variety, the other ingredients change.
Stepwise photos
1. I used frozen khoya. so firstly I brought it to room temperature and measured 1 cup in crumbled form.
Heat it in a non stick pan over medium flame for 5 minutes or until it oozes out fat.

2. Take care not to change it's colour much.

3. Cool down until warm and then add powdered sugar. Add cardamom, saffron soaked in warm milk and make a dough.

4. Grease a modak mold with ghee and fill it with this mixture. Level the bottom.

5. Unmold carefully and arrange in a plate. Make sure to grease the mold every time to make the modak.

Keep refrigerated and consume within a day or two. Rich and flavorful sweet for Ganesh chaturthi!

Notes
- The khoya was ½ cup after cooking, so I took ¼ cup sugar. Keep this as guidance.
- Do not add more milk or else it will become too sticky.
- In case it becomes sticky, add some milk powder.
- If its sticky, you can keep in fridge for better handling.
- You can use icing sugar, the quantity may slightly vary as it has corn starch in it.

Hi, is there an alternative name for khoya? Eg, ulunthu is referred to as dhal.
Where in Singapore could I buy this?
Raks anand says
You can find this in frozen section of mustafa just opposite to the paneer. It will be written as Khoya only. Let me know if you still could not find it in mustafa. You can ask the sales guys working there for help to spot it.
