Oats kanji recipe, oats porridge Indian style

August 13, 2009 by Raks Anand 53 Comments / Jump to Recipe

Oats Kanji - Indian style oats porridge (drinkable) for breakfast with garlic, coconut milk and spices. Perfect to suit Indian taste buds.

Spicy & flavorful Indian style oats porridge

This is a perfect breakfast to kick start a day, healthy and a spicy, tasty, flavourful one. Not at all bland and boring. As we are used to the flavors and spices in out cooking, being oats too new to our taste buds, no need to have it bland. You can preprare this way and enjoy it in our very own way.

As a kid I have tasted nombu kanji once from our sweet Muslim neighbor friends, when I was in holidays at my Periyappa's place in near Karaikal. It is a small place near Tarangambadi and have a lot of Muslim people living in the community. They are very friendly and they passed this vegetarian nombu kanji when I was there.

It is very flavorful and healthy one…It's made of raw rice and moong dal, with lots of garlic, veggies, coconut milk and flavored with fennel and coriander too! They make this Kanji to end their fasting .

We too make a similar version and call it as vendhaya kanji and it's very healthy, as it contains fenugreek seeds, garlic and coconut milk. It cures stomach/mouth ulcers, we don't add fennel or any other ingredients in it.

    Oats kanji recipe

So this oats porridge is fusion of the above two. This recipe is actually inspired by idea of Prathiba’s savory oats porridge, I tried recently her version and liked it so much, so thought I should try as my own version.

This kanji is good for feeding mothers too as it have oats and garlic which helps in increasing the milk supply as well as shedding off those pregnancy weight.

You can try adding when it becomes warm. But I dint had this problem so far, only if we boil after adding coconut milk, then it curdles.

Hey!! Can i try preparing the entire recipe till pressure cooking and store it in the fridge in the night and take it out in the morning and then add low fat boiled milk just before having breakfast??? Will there be any change in the taste or will it become thick if refrigerated and hence spoil the porridge completely. I'm asking this alternative cz I can save time in the morning. Awaiting ur reply...

Thanks for this recipe. When my daughter suddenly became health conscious she brought home a big pack of oats, after trying it once she didn't like its bland taste.(she likes everything super savoury) I think this porridge will suit her taste.
