Oats paniyaram recipe, Oats kara paniyaram

Updated on June 26, 2023 by Raks Anand 85 Comments / Jump to Recipe

Oats paniyaram is a healthy alternative to the traditional south Indian delicacy also known as paddu with oats. These are Instant, no fermentation version just the soaking time. Let's see how to make these fluffy savory dumplings with step by step images and quick video.

    Oats paniyaram

These are high in fiber and protein, perfect to kickstart a day as breakfast or as a filling snack during tea time.

Check out my oats kozhukattai recipe and oats upma recipe in this website.

This is not an out and out oats recipe, but added with lots of  lentils/ protein. So it's added advantage right? I tried this paniyaram last week and just loved it. This is somewhat like the kara paniyaram recipe I have in my archive, but I replaced rice with oats, it tasted really awesome.

The paniyarams turns out so so soft. In fact, I don’t make any oats recipes which tastes sweet as I cant even eat two mouths and love to  try different savoury recipes with oats.

    🥘 Paniyaram

Paniyarams are low fat version of deep fried things. Also you can shallow fry with the paniyaram pan/ appe pan. It turns out super crispy since we cook the batter in the shallows with oil. The oil level is in our control. so just greasing also works. Oats is perfect and turns out good when made in paniyaram form. Besides, being spicy version, it's really good to eat.

    Oats-paniyaram

    ⭐ Ingredients

Here are the ingredients needed for this recipe. Check out my recipe card for full list and quantities.

    Oats paddu or paniyaram

Oats - You can use any type of oats - Steel cut, rolled or instant. I have tried with instant and rolled oats.

Vegetables - To add nutritional value as well as texture that helps to keep the paniyaram not dense. I always add lots of onion, carrot. You can add other vegetables like cabbage, capsicum, tomato etc.

For flavor - Coriander leaves, curry leaves, ginger, fennel seeds and asafoetida are added to give this a great added flavor.

My favorite star ingredient in this recipe is asafoetida. Dal and asafoetida compliment each other. So that's why this recipe works and I highly recommend too.

Some people do not like fennel seeds, so you can replace with cumin seeds in that case.

    📖 Substitutions & Variations

    • You can add reduce toor dal to half the quantity, skip moong dal as well.
    • Add coconut - either grated or chopped for a beautiful texture as well as taste and flavor.
    • Tangy twist - Add ¼ cup of curd (plain yogurt) to the batter for a balanced taste.

    Serving suggestion:

Enjoy hot with sambar or chutney.

    Shelf life

The batter can be stored in fridge for couple of days. Do not leave the batter more than 3 hours in room temperature as it will ferment and affect the texture, taste.

Paniyarams tastes best when had fresh, I do not recommend keeping the cooked paniyaram in fridge as it will become dense.

    🥗 Goes well with

    • Coriander coconut chutney
    • Kara chutney
    • Peanut chutney

    Notes

Hi Raji... i too don't like sweet oats & always look for some savory recipes of oats... this sounds interesting & delicious... will this be sticky inside as oats have a gelatinous texture?

They look very soft and porous. Oats for breakfast, cooked in porride is quite boring when eaten regularly. This one is excellent variation and filled with the nutrition of legumes too.

Add lots of oil for first few times. Never use soap/ any kitchen cleaning/ vessel cleaning thing to clean for some time, there should be oil in the pan all the time. It should not get dry. Wash the rice you are going to cook everyday and pour the water you drain over the paniyaram pan. My mom says that will make it useable sooner. again, Use lots of oil that will help. You can make adai with the same batter, you can try that for emergency.

Hi, I love following your recipes, I've learned a lot from here. I just noticed your image for this recipe has a masaai statue next to the dish. It was a pretty cool image. That's originally from Africa, and that's where I belong.
