Onion tomato gotsu recipe Saravana bhavan style

September 19, 2008 by Raks Anand 29 Comments / Jump to Recipe

Onion tomato gotsu, easy to make, but a yummy, tangy side dish that goes well with Idli, dosa and rotis also!

    onion tomato gotsu
    onion tomato gotsu

My mom makes with moong dal in this, but my MIL makes this as side dish for chapati. I love it with idli dosa too.

I have tasted this type of side dish in Saravana bhavan too at time. (Updated picture,I have used red chilli powder instead of green chillies)

So the colour is appealing. You can use combination of both for flavor.

    Method

    1. Chop onions and tomatoes finely and slit the green chillies into two.
    2. Heat a kadai/heavy bottomed vessel with oil and when oil is hot add the tempering items followed by curry leaves, green chillies and onion.
    3. Fry till onion becomes slightly pinkish / transparent. Add chopped tomatoes and required salt and keep sauteing, till it becomes mushy.
    saute

    4. Fry in medium flame for 5-6 minutes and then add ¼ cup water and bring to boil.Simmer for few minutes to form a thick gravy consistency.

    boil

Transfer to serving bowl and enjoy with idli, dosa or rotis!

    Instructions

    • Chop onions and tomatoes finely and slit the green chillies into two.
    • Heat a kadai/ heavy bottomed vessel with oil and when oil is hot add the tempering items.
    • Follow by curry leaves, green chillies (if adding) and onion.
    • Fry till onion becomes slightly pinkish / transparent.
    • Add chopped tomatoes and required salt and keep sauteing, till it becomes  mushy. If adding red chilli powder, add along salt now.
    • Fry in medium flame for 4 minutes and then add ¼ cup water.
    • Bring to boil. Simmer for 4-5 minutes to form a thick gravy consistency.
    • Switch off and garnish with coriander if desired.

    Notes

    • Always add less water.
    • Add a teaspoon of ghee while frying for enhanced taste.
    • Colour purely depends on the colour of the tomatoes, so use red ripe tomatoes and chilli powder (use kashmiri chilli powder) to get the colour, as in the first two updated pictures.

I love this simple dish. The colour and flavour is so nice. My extra addition would be a pinch of sugar 🙂

Hi, I am Vaneetha. The pictures of Idly and the gravy look so amazing. My mom is an amazing cook, but I am in Australia now and how much ever I try, Idly and dosa dont turn up well. I am not sure if its the quality of rice here or if I am doing something wrong. Can you post how you made such amazing idlis. Thanks.
