    About

Pav bhaji is a popular street food in north India with medley of vegetables, with aromatic spices simmered oodles of butter. It is usually served with a par of desi pav buns.

Some people swear either cabbage or cauliflower is a must in a pav bhaji equally important as potato.

All the vegetables and masala should blend so well, so you might have seen street food vendors using the masher as they prepare it.

    Memories

I remember, the first time when I ate Pav bhaji in my home town Salem,in a restaurant called Salem cafe.

The very instant I fell in love with pav bhaji. I love the butter smell in both the Pav(Bread)and the Bhaji….

But never knew I will make of my own! If I knew this is so simple to make,I would have made this long time before and made very often…

But it's okay, better than be late than never right…? A great kids pleaser and even everyone in the family would love this.

When I saw in my sis in law’s blog, from that time I wanted to try, even my friend Sangeeta asked me to try and gave a pack of MTR Pav Bhaji Masala.

I simply followed the recipe given in the back side of the pack..And it came out really very well…please do try and let me know if I am wrong.

    pav bhaji recipe

    Method:

    1. Pressure cook peeled, chopped potatoes and other chopped veggies together with little water, upto 3 whistles in pressure cooker.
    1. Heat a broad pan with butter, fry onion until translucent.

    4. After that add ginger garlic paste, fry till raw smell of the ginger garlic paste goes off.

    5. Following it, add tomatoes, salt, pav Bhaji masala and red chilli powder.

Fry till tomatoes turns soft and mushy.

    6. Then add the capsicum and fry for a minute.

    7. Then add all the veggies, mash well.

    8. Simmer for 5 to 7 minutes and mash with a ladle so that all the veggies get mixed well. Switch off stove.

Finally add butter, lemon juice if desired. Bhaji is ready now to serve with pav.

    pav bhaji

Garnish with finely chopped onion, coriander leaves and squeeze lemon as needed and spread the bhaji in between a well golden roasted buns/Pav/bread and enjoy hot!

    • Pressure cook peeled, chopped potatoes and other chopped veggies together with little water, upto 3 whistles in pressure cooker.
    • Mash nicely with a potato masher and set aside.
    • Heat a broad pan with butter, fry onion until translucent.

    Notes

    • Veggies can be of your choice,u can add or reduce one or two….

    • You can puree (grind smoothly) tomato and add instead of chopping. but it will splutter a lot, so cook covered.

      Hi Raks,

Thanks for the wonderful yet easy pav Bhaaji Recipe. See my tips below:

You can add half a Beetroot (Bhaaji won't taste of Beetroot) if you want a red colour pav Bhaaji.

For a more orange reddish colour, soak some dried red chillies in water n then grind this with the ginger garlic to make a paste.
This gives good taste n colour.
