Special potato curry with fresh ground masala

Hope you all friends had a safe and great Diwali! Here’s some of the Diwali day photos to share with you.I made Chakli, Sev/Ompodi,Thenkuzhal( its a kind of murukku), and in sweets-Badhusha and Gulab Jamoons…

And now, coming to the post ! This curry is different from the usual potato curry we make and this one uses freshly ground masala.My mother-in-law learnt this recipe from a Cookery show and she makes this very often.This is very flavorful one…Try this you will surely like!
Potato curry

Ingredients:

Potato2,Big
Onion1
Turmeric1/8 tsp
Curry leaves1 sprig
SaltAs needed
Coconut oil1 tsp (optional)

To Grind:

Garlic2 flakes 
Coriander seeds1/2 tbsp
Coconut2 tbsp
Red chillies3
Black pepper whole1 tsp
Jeera1/2 tsp

To Temper:

Mustard3/4 tsp
Urad dal1 tsp
Oil 1 tbsp

Method:

  1. Peel the potato skin,wash and cut into 1 inch pieces as shown in the picture.Keep immersed in water till you use.
  2. special potato curry

  3. Cut onion length wise and keep aside.
  4. Grind the ingredients under the “To Grind” table ,without adding water.
  5. Coriander,coconut,red chillies,pepper,jeeraPowdered

  6. Heat oil in kadai and add mustard,urad dal and then add curry leaves and onion,fry till onion turns out golden brown.
  7. Fry till transparent

  8. Then add the cut potatoes,salt and turmeric and fry in medium flame for 2-3 minutes.
  9. Add the ground masala powder and add enough water to the potato to get cooked.
  10. Potato,turmeric,salt addedCook with masala and water

  11. Mix well and cook cover with a lid in a medium flame,till the potato gets cooked.Keep turning in between to avoid burning.
  12. After potato gets cooked,fry till water evaporates completely and curry should be dry.
  13. Dry

  14. If desired add coconut oil at the end and transfer to the serving bowl and Serve as accompaniment for rice!
  15. Ready

    Rangoli is very neat and nice fantastic, goodies look crisp n nice. Potato curry masala is a winner, potato is so versatile, you just have to be creative with masalas I think 🙂 Trust you had wonderful Deepavali!

    Hi,
    The Diwali maakolam looks amzing. I make a similar kolam too. Can u pls tell me how did u make the perfect circle in the outer boundary? Do u use some thing to make tht or is it freehand?

    Hi Priya,thanks for the nice words, I dont use anything for making that circle free hand only,I have made this kolam so many times,so through practice it comes out good. 🙂

    Hi, can you give a quick fix for the grinding masala if i added water (without reading the whole post 🙁 ).
    the whole thing is watery and now what to do?? 🙁

    Thats fine if you add water and grind. Later we are adding water to cook right, so adjust with that.
