    Special potato curry with fresh masala to make a spicy and flavorful curry served as accompaniment for South Indian lunch.

    Hope you all friends had a safe and great Diwali! Here's some of the Diwali day photos to share with you. I made Chakli, Sev/ Ompodi, Thenkuzhal (its a kind of murukku) and in sweets-Badhusha and Gulab Jamoons...

    This curry is different from the usual potato curry we make and this one uses freshly ground masala.

    My mother-in-law learnt this recipe from a Cookery show and she makes this very often. This is very flavorful one...Try this you will surely like!

    Apart from flavor and taste, the spices we add in the curry helps balancing the gastric quality in potato.

    Special potato curry with fresh masala

    Ingredients

    • 2 Potato
    • 1 Onion
    • ⅛ teaspoon Turmeric
    • 1 sprig Curry leaves
    • Salt
    • 1 teaspoon Coconut oil optional

    To Grind:

    • 2 flakes Garlic
    • ½ tablespoon Coriander seeds
    • 2 tablespoon Coconut
    • 3 Red chillies
    • 1 teaspoon Black pepper whole
    • ½ teaspoon Cumin seeds

    To Temper:

    • ½ teaspoon Mustard
    • 1 teaspoon Urad dal
    • 1 tablespoon Oil
    Prevent your screen from going dark

    Instructions

    • Peel the potato skin firstly, wash and cut into 1 inch pieces as shown in the picture. Keep immersed in water till you use.
    • Cut onion length wise and keep aside.
    • Grind the ingredients under the "To Grind" table , without adding water.
    • Heat oil in kadai and add mustard, urad dal and then add curry leaves.
    • Add onion, fry till onion turns out golden brown.
    • Then add the cut potatoes, salt and turmeric and fry in medium flame for 2-3 minutes.
    • Add the ground masala powder and add enough water to the potato to get cooked.
    • Mix well and cook cover with a lid in a medium flame, till the potato gets cooked. Keep turning in between to avoid burning.
    • After potato gets cooked, fry till water evaporates completely and curry should be dry.

    • If desired add coconut oil at the end and transfer to the serving bowl

    Notes

    • Make sure to grind the masala coarsely. Then only it will not stick to kadai while cooking.
    • Do not add more garlic than mentioned
    • Instead of cumin, if you like fennel seeds flavour, you can add it as well.
    • A tomato can be added  after frying onion.

      The Diwali maakolam looks amzing. I make a similar kolam too. Can u pls tell me how did u make the perfect circle in the outer boundary? Do u use some thing to make tht or is it freehand?

      Hi, can you give a quick fix for the grinding masala if i added water (without reading the whole post 🙁 ).

      Thats fine if you add water and grind. Later we are adding water to cook right, so adjust with that.
