Veg Momos recipe, a popular snack prepared with maida and vegetables and a steamed version. Learn how to make momos with a helping video for shaping the momos.
This is the first time I am trying veg momos. Tasted for first time as well. I had a wish to try this ever since my SIL posted this. But have been postponing trying this due to various reasons. Now since a reader requested this recipe in my recipe request page, I thought of posting it.
Since this is the first time, I took some time to make this. But its quite easy. For me making a post became a pressure today, otherwise its easy. Perfect for your kids and your family. It’s really delicious and I bet you wont stop eating just one. I have tried this with maida, you can also try this with wheat flour. Check out my paneer momos with wheat flour.
The stuffing I made is as the same as my spring roll stuffing, except I added chopped garlic today. Otherwise the same. Excuse the shape and size of the momos 😉
Veg Momos recipe
Ingredients
- ¾ cup All purpose flour/ maida
- Water as needed
- Salt as needed
- 2 tsp Oil
For stuffing
- 1 cup Finely chopped cabbage
- ¼ cup Finely chopped Carrot
- 1 tbsp Finely chopped garlic
- 4 Spring onion sprigs
- ¼ tsp sugar
- ½ tsp Black pepper powder
- 1 sp Soya sauce
- Salt as needed
- 1 tbsp Oil
Instructions
- Mix flour, salt and oil in a bowl and add water to make a smooth pliable dough. Just like our poori dough. Keep aside covered.
- Heat a pan with oil, add garlic, and finely chopped white part of the spring onion. Give a stir in high flame. Add the chopped veggies, sugar and fry in high flame for a minute.
- Add salt, pepper, soy sauce and mix well. Lastly add finely chopped green part of the spring onion and mix for a minute in medium flame. Switch off and keep aside.
- I rolled the dough into a big disc and used a big lid to cut into smaller discs. After that I again roll to make it more thin. Keep some stuffing we prepared in the middle.
- Fold it to make momo shapes. refer my video – click here or refer below.
- Steam it in a steamer spaced properly, for 5 minutes.
Video
Notes
- Adding oil in the dough gives softer outer layer.

this is not just a pressure post but a high pressure post!! 🙂
True Bharathy! Super pressure post 😀 haha
Thank you all for your comments 🙂
super inviting dear
Nups,
Yes if you have a pressure cooker, fill it with 3/4 cup water, then place a broad bowl(height should be less)filled with water as well. Now place a greased plate over it and arrange the momos over it. If you have a perforated plate, then it would be more apt for it.No need to add the weight valve.Just steam for 10 minutes. Even you can follow the same inside an electric cooker or even in a big kadai. Electric cooker has one accessory now a days. You can try in that.
btw last photo was stunning 🙂
looks inviting, soon will try it out!!
I saw the post in Chitra's too. You have shaped the momos very beautifully. Loved the perfect pleats.
One of my fav..I make the stuffing same way too..Its multipurpose but tastes diff in each of the dishes!! These have come out perfect Raks.. 🙂

If you place the plate with dumplings after the water in kadai starts boiling, 4 – 5 minutes is enough. Over cooked in the sense the outer layer was hard?
Hi Raji.. picture perfect momos 🙂 Props are super cool. Those plastic cubes – are they salt and pepper??
Recently i read about momos in another blog.. chk this link:

Guess first time or many times, you aim for perfection and these are just lovely. I love steamed momos
I love these, but then its only me who loves to eat them, family not a big fan.

I had tried it once but did not come out well. this looks too good.
hey Raji..i tried the momos today as evening snack and it turned out to be great..thanks for the recipe..one tip i would like to give..if the momos become dry on steaming..one can add a few drops of oil in the water which is used for steaming ..this way momos wont dry up..
Is the soy sauce really necessary??? Or can we ignore it because its just one spoon only no??
Feel free to skip, the Chinese flavor may miss.
i tried these momos they came out well..tomato garlic dip was awesome.i really love ur recipes. thank u
hi can i use idli steamer or an electric rice cooker to make momos?
Any steamer will work. Electric rice cooker has an optional tray to steam, so u can use that.
Hi raji,
I plan to do this for my girls b day party, can I shape d momos n keep it covered for an hour or two before steaming? It's best served hot right? If it becomes cold, the outer cover becomes rubbery! Pls help me…

Hi,I have tried this…but the outer layer was very hard…and I used idli plates for steaming….is it bcoz of that?
It ant be coz of idli plate, may be the water content in your dough was less. Use oil while preparing the dough, it helps to bring it soft.
Thanks for ur reply…will try this next time….
Wah! kaya momos the….::)
Hi Raks … i am a great fan of your recipes, i have tried out lot of your recipes. as you have mentioned in the recipe can i just use wheat flour instead of all purpose flour?? and if so do i have to make any changes while steaming or while rolling out the dough ???
No changes, just follow the same…
In our house this is one of our fav dish, my kids love
Hi Raks,
I am new fan of urs..i have recently got married and is a newbie to cooking…
Please post in some baking recipes..eggless and what is all purpose flour exactly???
i will make it today
All purpose flour is nothing buy maida.
I have question that if we don't have momos steamer then how can we steam it
If you have a pressure cooker, place the momos in a plate. Add some water in pressure cooker, place a vessel and the plate with momos over that. Cover with lid and steam for 15 mins. Do not use the pressure regulator.

The way you put forward your First Timer status is so human. I would love to read your language more, visit your blog and b a visitor on your site. Wanted an easy Momo recipe for my 5 yr old daughter. I think I got it. Thanks.
Thank you very much 🙂

I am so fond of recipes ……. But this is the best and easiest recipe of all!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hi, i tried once with maida, though the stuffing came out delicious, the outer dough was a bit hard, do we have to mix rice flour to make it a little soft…
thanks for sharing.. momo's look very yummy and delicious.
I love momos and I can't live without eating momos………..
Tried this today and came out awesome…thanks raks
Great recipe! I've been cooking only a few months and was so intimidated by momos – but this looks so doable! Trying it today! 🙂
its a great recipe as well as easy to make thanks
Hi, plz tell hw to check the momos wheather done or need some more steam
Colour will change from white to dull white and becomes bit shiny
You can even add boiled soya chunks and mashed paneer. .but do not cook paneer as it gets cooked when you steam it.. Try adding some ginger paste too..
Hi – It looks nice.. can you post the recipe for the momos tomato chutney also..
is it compulsory to have soya sace in it or we can have anything alce in it instead of it
Just skip it.
You can steam them in electric rice cooker also if you have.
Hi Raks….
I am like ekalavyan learning from dhrona, learning cooking from you. Whole concept of cooking changed for me after I visited your blog…I have tried many of your recipes…. I call u a teacher cos your recipes give the basic idea of the dish and enhance imagination to try variety with the same. Thank you so much 🙂 And please continue ur valuable contribution to beginners like us.
Now coming to momo, can I try making it in idly vessel if I don't have a steamer?
Thank you 🙂 Sure I too made in idli vessel only. Only I placed over a mesh. You can place in greased idli plate.
OK 🙂 thank you…..
Awesome dish n very good in taste… Thanks for sharing it Raks n I tried many dishes from ur blog n all turned successful try for me:)

awesome thanks for sharing will try this recipe soon
Delicious recipe. The whole family loved them! The first batch stuck to the bottom of my stainless steel container, but parchment paper fixed the problem for the rest of the them. Been cooking for 15 years, but your website is now my Bible for yummy recipes!
Thank you for the feedback 🙂 Did you greased your container before placing the momos?
Just a doubt. Can we make momos using rice flour instead of maida. More Healthy!! Will the momos turn out smooth with rice flour??
For using rice flour, we wont be able to shape it unless we use hot water to make the dough and it will be the Indian steamed kozhukattai 🙂 You can choose wheat flour if you like
