    Veg momos

Veg Momos can be enjoyed any time through out the year as snack. It is a popular street food in the north of India typically served with a spicy chilli chutney.

Do check out my Paneer version recipe in my website and goes well with this tomato chutney I posted earlier.

This is the first time I am trying as well as tasting veg momos. I had a wish to try this ever since my SIL posted this.

But have been postponing trying this due to various reasons. Now since a reader requested this recipe in my recipe request page, I thought of posting it.

Since this is the first time, It was laborious to make this. Also making a post today become a mandatory today, other wise its quite easy when you make on regular days.

It's really delicious and I bet you won't stop eating just one. I have tried this with maida, you can also try this with wheat flour.

    Stuffing

The stuffing I made is as the same as the one I used in my spring roll, except I added garlic today.

    • Firstly add garlic to hot oil in a pan above high heat. Then saute the white part of spring onion.
    • After that add very finely chopped vegetables.
    • Saute furthermore in high heat just for a minute without changing color.
    • Add along sugar to give a balanced taste, retain color and give glaze.
    • Finally add sauces, salt and pepper as needed.

Excuse the shape and size of the momos 😉

    Veg momos recipe
    Veg momos

    Variations

The filling is very much of your choice. You can add grated radish, mushrooms as we do for spring roll.

I have done veg paneer momos which is perfect in this well.

There are lot of variations like sautéing the momos in pan, deep frying or even adding in a quick sauce (gravy).

    Storage

You can prepare the momos, steam and reheat while serving. Consume within a day in room temperature.

You can also prepare and arrange in a tray and cling wrap it the previous day, then next day steam it.

I have not tried freezing momos, but first arrange in a tray, cling wrap it. Then take it out after freezing for 8 hours to bag it. Better to consume within a month.

To reheat the frozen momos, leave it in counter top for 30 minutes to defrost it.

Then cook it as mentioned below.

    Top tip

Make the skin thin so that the momos turns out perfect.

Adding oil in the momos dough adds softness to the skin.

Don't worry about perfect shape, after all it tastes same and only taste matters 🙂

    Instructions

    • Mix flour, salt and oil in a bowl and add water to make a smooth pliable dough. Just like our poori dough. Keep aside covered.
    • Heat a pan with oil, add garlic, and finely chopped white part of the spring onion. Give a stir in high flame. Add the chopped veggies, sugar and fry in high flame for a minute.
    • Add salt, pepper, soy sauce and mix well. Lastly add finely chopped green part of the spring onion and mix for a minute in medium flame. Switch off and keep aside.
    • I rolled the dough into a big disc and used a big lid to cut into smaller discs. After that I again roll to make it more thin. Keep some stuffing we prepared in the middle.
    • Fold it to make momo shapes. refer my video – click here or refer below.
    • Steam it in a steamer spaced properly, for 5 minutes.

      Nups,

Yes if you have a pressure cooker, fill it with 3/4 cup water, then place a broad bowl(height should be less)filled with water as well. Now place a greased plate over it and arrange the momos over it. If you have a perforated plate, then it would be more apt for it.No need to add the weight valve.Just steam for 10 minutes. Even you can follow the same inside an electric cooker or even in a big kadai. Electric cooker has one accessory now a days. You can try in that.

If you place the plate with dumplings after the water in kadai starts boiling, 4 - 5 minutes is enough. Over cooked in the sense the outer layer was hard?

Hi,I have tried this...but the outer layer was very hard...and I used idli plates for steaming....is it bcoz of that?

It ant be coz of idli plate, may be the water content in your dough was less. Use oil while preparing the dough, it helps to bring it soft.

If you have a pressure cooker, place the momos in a plate. Add some water in pressure cooker, place a vessel and the plate with momos over that. Cover with lid and steam for 15 mins. Do not use the pressure regulator.

You can even add boiled soya chunks and mashed paneer. .but do not cook paneer as it gets cooked when you steam it.. Try adding some ginger paste too..

For using rice flour, we wont be able to shape it unless we use hot water to make the dough and it will be the Indian steamed kozhukattai 🙂 You can choose wheat flour if you like
