Servings: 4 people

  • 1 cup Rice flour I used idiyappam flour
  • ½ cup Urad dal white, whole
  • 2 cups water
  • 4 Green chillies
  • 2 pinches Asafoetida
  • 3 tablespoon Grated coconut
  • Salt as needed

To temper

  • ½ teaspoon Mustard
  • 2 pinches Asafoetida
  • 1 sprig Curry leaves

  • Soak urad dhal for an hour and grind green chillies first and then add asafoetida and urad dal to it.
  • Use inch/juice button in the mixer to grind to a coarse paste.
  • Heat a heavy bottomed vessel with 2 teaspoon of oil and add the tadka items.
  • Pour water to it, add required salt.
  • When the water starts boiling, add the ground paste, coconut.
  • Add rice flour stirring briskly with flame low.
  • Stir till you get a dough consistency, by this time the rice flour should have got half cooked and you get a dough.
  • The dough will not be so sticky after it cools down.
  • Grease the idly plate and your hands with oil and make round patties (pidi kozhukattai)
  • Arrange them and steam cook for 10 minutes.

  • Depending on the variety of rice flour you use, the water gets absorbed quickly or takes time after you add it to the boiling water.
  • Anyways we make patties and steam again, so it doesn't matter much.
  • Coconut can be added more or less as per your wish. You can use coconut bits too.
